Today is our first sea day on the Nieuw Statendam. Clocks moved forward one hour this morning so we decided to have room service since we’d most likely just be waking up around 6 am.
Sea Day Morning
I was awake about 20 minutes beforehand and the coffee came around 6:20 am. It’s was nice to have it delivered and I loved the little jar the cream came in. Next time we’ll request a bigger pot as this had three full cups.
After enjoying my caffeine I went up to the buffet to use my iPad and have yet more coffee. Then it was breakfast time and E. joined me. I had a delicious bacon, spinach and cheese omelette cooked to order along with potatoes.
I also had a couple of my favorite pastries.
When we went outside afterwards it was pouring rain which continued most of the morning. I got my book and laid in a lounger in the covered pool area until getting up to go to the coffee chat at 9:30.
Coffee chat is when the cruise director interviews another crew member. Today’s guest was the hotel director and he was very interesting.
I learned that entertainment is going to be added in the near future as will a full fledged library in the studio room. They’re moving the arts/crafts up to explorations area.
After that I looked in the shops and moseyed around until 11 am presentation/lecture on “Sports Heroes of the Caribbean”.
It was well done and interesting.
Sea Day Afternoon
Then it was to the NY Deli for a meatball sub for lunch.
I stopped by the buffet to get a piece of pecan pie for dessert before going back to the cabin.
We both napped (after all we lost an hour of sleep) but were sure to wake in time to go to 3 pm tea time. It’s as surprising how many people showed up for tea time.
I thought the servings were a little light (particularly with the sandwiches) for two people but we probably could have gotten more.
They weren’t cut so I had the curried chicken, E had the egg salad and neither of us wanted the smoked salmon. They happily gave me mint tea instead of the black tea.
After this I went out to the aft pool and found a comfy overstuffed chair to read in until it was time to get ready for dinner.
Sea Day Evening
We arrived in the dining room late but by less than 10 minutes. Others must have come early because they were already eating appetizers. Here is tonight’s gala menu celebrating 150 years of sailing.
We ordered drinks and I tried the Dutch 75 specialty cocktail which was excellent (could have had multiples!).
Our first course was shrimp cocktail. It was very good but a bit hard to eat because the sauce was on the entire shrimp and a couple still had tails.
Second course was the tomato with potato chive dumpling soup. It was good but a generous serving and just one tiny dumpling.
Our entrees were the beef tenderloin with shrimp. I had to send my first one back as it was rare instead of the medium I ordered.
The second one actually was a bit rare too (under the shrimp) but not as bad and I kept it. Nevertheless, it was very good and I enjoyed every bite of the shrimp and vegetables and 85% of the meat. 🙂
For dessert I had my usual decaf coffee and the no sugar added blueberry cheesecake.
It was a nice light way to end the meal.
I’ve already seen tonight’s show on a previous sailing so decided just to go back to the cabin and watch TV/read. Enjoyed the movie “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”. Tomorrow’s program and port shopping map was waiting in the mail slot.
I had 4100 steps today but it’s as probably more because I forgot to plug in my charger last night and had to charge it instead of wear my watch during the morning.
Here is today’s program (Click image for full PDF).
