I consider myself a seasoned frequent traveler but made a rookie mistake last week with a car rental. Between business and personal travel, I’m flying at least one round-trip a month and often two or more. In the past 25 years I’ve rented a lot of cars although I do prefer ridesharing these days whenever possible.
Last week I needed a rental car to get from the city my son lives in to a family reunion 100 miles away. Although I’d booked a rental car on Hertz for what I considered a good price, I cancelled it when Hotwire had a rental price saving me $12.
My mistake was not reading the fine print! The price included only 100 miles per day and I drove twice that. It was quite a shock when I returned the car and was billed 12 cents a mile for the overage. So instead of saving $12 I paid about 20 more than the original Hertz reservation.
Even a seasoned traveler makes mistakes and I’ll now be more vigilant about rental policies. Have you had a travel fail recently?
