This isn’t an ordinary sea day on the Zuiderdam. No, we will cross the Arctic Circle for a bit!
We’re also sailing along the Icelandic coastline all day which should be very scenic. It is cloudy early in the morning but blue skies should show up.
Sea Day Morning
I met Steve in the Crow’s Nest for coffee after getting up around 6:30. This is the ship’s position at 7 am.
After getting laundry to our cabin steward who had already tidied up our cabin, we went to breakfast in the MDR when it opened. Here are today’s specials.
I had the crab benedict today along with a mimosa.
At 9, I attended the first coffee chat hosted by Tjalling. The guest was the corporate Ice Captain, Michael. I didn’t catch his last name.
It was interesting. Next, I went by the hospitality area for cruise specialists and thanked Wendy and Steve for the birthday cards for my Steve. I chatted there with them and other passengers until shortly before 11 when I went to the destination talk. Unfortunately there wasn’t any information about Akureyri.
What we did get was a presentation on the history of Iceland through World World II. At the start of WWII Iceland was under the Danish flag. The Nazi’s invasion of Denmark in 1940 resulted in Iceland declaring independence and neutrality.
Despite that neutrality, Allied Forces invaded Iceland to use it as a strategic location throughout the war.
For the Icelandic people the war became a “blessing” because it brought needed infrastructure to their country.
After checking in with Steve who’s staying in the cabin except for meals and resting I went to lunch in the MDR. His cold is no worse but not a lot better. These certificates had been delivered to the cabin.
Sea Day Afternoon and Evening
Today was the Indonesian Lunch with a set menu.
I sat at a sharing table and the ice pilot interviewed this morning was one of the other guests. The appetizer was very good.
This picture of the tasting plate entree doesn’t do it justice.
There was a lot of good things you can and can’t see on the plate. The only thing I didn’t like was the fish; too mushy.
The rice pudding was too sweet for me but I did enjoy the banana fritter in there.
I enjoyed the conversation and meal with all of the other five guests. Afterwards I went to the cabin to spend time with Steve and rest up.
He’s not going to dinner in the MDR again to keep our fellow table mates way from any germs. Another of our tablemates missed with a cold as well.
I started with the Thai beef and papaya salad.
Although prime rib was popular (plus they had my favorite turkey!) I selected the fettuccine with short rib bolognese.
Very good! Dessert was carrot cake and was pretty good.
Steve was up in time Lido having prime rib and his carrot cake when I joined him.
We spent rest of evening in the cabin where this was waiting for us.
My excursion tomorrow meets at 7:30 so I packed up my backpack and read some before bed.
Here is today’s daily program. Click the image for the full PDF.
