I love yogurt and normally eat it several times a week. There are lots of great reasons to enjoy yogurt including probiotics, calcium and protein. All good things right?
That’s why I was surprised to learn that Dannon adds carmine to 13 fruit-flavored yogurts (such as strawberry) to increase the red coloring. The carmine comes from the crushed bodies of dried bodies cochineal insects. I didn’t know what carmine was until recently educated.
I don’t know about you but I don’t want to unknowingly eat insects! For me it’s a matter of disgust but it is a big deal for people with allergies and vegetarians. You shouldn’t worry about your life when enjoying a tasty serving of healthy food.
My suggestion would be for Dannon to add more fruit to provide the nice red color or a natural (plant-based) food coloring.
Let Dannon know you’re not a fan of bugs in their product by signing this petition and then share this information with your friends and family. I’m sure they will be just as surprised as we are to learn about the source of Carmine.
